Today just after am we will be setting off to Dublin to see if we will win an award for our Wildlife website. We are super excited to go hopefully we win, but it's OK if we don't!
Today as well the garden is looking lovely, bright and green. It is very lively with lots of birds and bugs happy in the sunshine! By Tori, Samantha, Tadhg and Abdul. We are very excited to announce that the NETNS Wildlife Zone has been shortlisted for a Eircom Junior Spiders Award! The shortlisting reflects all of the hard work that children have put in to making the site an interesting and informative website to visit!
We have been shortlisted in the Best Project category. The Eircom Junior Spider Awards were established in 2009 and promote and celebrate ICT learning! You can see all of the other entries here Blue Whales are the largest animals to have EVER lived on planet Earth, bigger than any of the dinosaurs. Their hearts are the size of a car and they only beat 5 times a minute!
Unfortunately, their numbers are thought to be very low at the moment, and there may be as few as 400 living in the North atlantic. It makes even more special that they might be regular visitors in the autumn to Irish waters. Read more about the recent sightings and see some photos at irelandswildlife.com There is more information on the BBC's fantastic nature page here and also on the National Geographic Kids page too! We had a brilliant National Tree Day. Lots of classes went on a tree hunt and identified some of the different species of trees in the garden. 4th Class also planted native Hazel nuts and Horse Chestnuts (conkers) in pots. Hopefully they will start to grow and by springtime our tree nursery will have lots of small saplings in it! We have been very lucky to have some butterfly visitors over the last two weeks! The Buddlea bushes on the Cearnóg were teeming with Small Tortoiseshell butterflies. There were also a large number of Bees visiting the Buddlea's bright purple flowers.
You can learn all about butterflies at the brilliant Irishbutterflies.com. Yesterday we were super lucky to see many wonderful things in the wildlife garden. When I came into school I found the Squirrel had knocked over the bird feeder and was busy stocking up on peanuts. I had to be quick, but I managed to get a photo before it ran away! Then we were very lucky to spot some baby birds being fed by their mother and father. They were baby Great Tits. The babies sat high up in the tree as their mum and dad went back and to to the peanuts to get food. If you look very very carefully, you can see one of the babies in a photo. Abdul and Alex then spotted a Goldfinch on the bird feeder camera, the first time we've seen that bird in the NETNS Wildlife Garden! After that we were very lucky to see a Treecreeper baby and its mother and father. The baby would cling very tightly to a tree as it's mother and father would bring it little bits of food. It was very hard to spot, but Katherine, Ryan, Doireann and Inez from Denise's class did a brilliant job helping me find it so we could take some pictures. Can you spot it? You can hear Abdul and Alex talking about the birds they saw below. This week we have been trying out the new bird-feeder camera! It has caused a lot of excitement, and we have seen lots of different birds. They include Chaffinches, Great Tits, Blue Tits, and Coal Tits. Can you tell which is which? You could use our Fact-files to help you! Listen below to Claudia, Charile and Raghad from 2nd Class talking about the birds we saw this week. It is now late Spring in the garden and there are new plants that have grown from the ground. There are Buttercups. The Crab Apple trees are growing. There are lots of Stinging Nettles, Bluebells and the trees have leaves on them! The Bluebells are pretty. The grass is long and green. There is lots of Cow Parsley too. Words and pictures by Patrycja, Jakub, Darragh and Tiárnan Today some willing workers from 6th class helped install the bird feeder cam. Soon we hope to have a live link to the camera on the website, but for now we are going to take photos of the birds that visit.
We had to work together to install the feeder and the camera on the tree. We used a modified webcam linked to a computer inside school. |
